Five Keys to a Purposeful Life

I ask people around me, “what’s new in your life?”

More often than not I get, “nothing really, same old, same old!” This is usually completed with a wistful or melancholy sigh. I ask about the sigh or are they content with their day to day. Many will tell me that they are uninspired, unmotivated and really unclear about their purpose in life. Hitting the snooze button as often as possible, when they do get up, they shuffle around doing the morning routine without really thinking about it. Coffee is their saving grace.

What if you woke up before the alarm refreshed from a great night of sleep? What if you were awake and energised looking forward to the day ahead before that cup of coffee? What if you knew that each day was a day closer to the way you would really like your life to be? Or better still, what if you were living that life right now? A vision statement will set you on that path!!

The five keys are so available to you. They are who, what, where, when and in particular, why!

Seems so simple and obvious too.

However, the questions are quite deep.

The who, is about you, and those around you

➽Who do you have around you that you want to have around you?

➽What characteristics do you admire/like about them?

➽Who do you need to be to become who you want to be?

➽Who do you want to help?


The what, is about what you want to do

🖝What are your interests, talents, skills?

🖝What do you like about what you do now?

🖝What don’t you like about what you do now?

🖝What excites you?

🖝What kind of money do you want to have/make?

🖝What skills and talents can you use to help the people you want to help?

The where, is about where you want to do what you want to do

■Do you like where you live and/or work now?

■What do you like about it?

■What do you not like about it?

■Where would you like to live and/or work?

■What does this place look like?

■Where do you want to make your contribution?

From the comfort of your home, within an organisation (administration), or a more hands-on approach (teaching a sport/music)?

The when, is how soon do you want to be doing what you want to do

⬬Is this a desire for your future?

⬬Is this an immediate desire?

⬬How long have you wanted this?

⬬How soon can you begin to help those you want to help?

⬬What do you need to put in place before you begin?

And the “why,” is the most important of all!

The why is what keeps you motivated to keep on going when the emotional desire is not there. It’s the most significant key to consistent motivation and inspiration. 

💣Ask yourself why you want what you want ~this  is likely not very specific

💣Ask yourself why you want the answer to the first question

💣Continue to ask yourself why until there is a real and compelling reason that is so specific that it gives you a very strong sense (often emotional) of the importance/urgency to move forward ( asking yourself 7 times will likely hit the final mark)

You now have the framework to create a Vision Statement. This statement incorporates all of the above questions into paragraphs that describe what your successful life will look like. Have someone read it to you and tweak it until it describes your successful life perfectly, until it makes you happy and inspired whenever you read it.


If you find this task too lengthy or daunting, I can help you to write your own vision statement in just a couple of one-one sessions, or as I have done for many of my clients, write your vision statement for you. I read it to you a few times as you sit and relax and take it in. Then I print it or send it to you to print out so you can read it to yourself on a regular basis. You’ll be surprised at how quickly things will come together to create that success!
