My Challenge
I’ve just completed a book…
“Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone To Take Action,” by Simon Sinek and I am challenged. Being challenged is a very good thing; at least it is for me!
I also feel much better about my inability to completely articulate why I am in the business I am in. On page 56, Simon explains, “The part of our brain that controls our feelings has no capacity for language. It is this disconnection that makes putting our feelings into words so hard.”
Even so, I will attempt to put my feelings (why I do what I do) into words:
One thing that absolutely makes me very frustrated, angry, and sickened is human trafficking. Whether it’s abusing people by overworking them, prostitution, child pornography, or by other means, I am absolutely beyond imagining why one human being would do that to another and that there is NO excuse for it! Black and white ~ NO EXCUSE!
While I recognize that what I do cannot eradicate human trafficking I can empower people to have their own values and beliefs. Ones not borrowed or learned or having been forced upon. I see so many people floundering with not knowing how to handle everyday circumstances, and not knowing how to respond to novel situations because they have borrowed from, learned from, or have had others’ ways of dealing with things forced upon them. There is no basis for making the decisions that have to be made.
Well founded, grounded in truth values and beliefs create a foundation with which to make exceptional and fundamental life decisions for the individual. Once this foundation is determined habits, relationships, boundaries, choices, actions, responses, career decisions, financial decisions, life decisions become consistent and powerful. Freedom to live the life meant to be lived is realized.
I understand that this approach will not completely stop some from falling prey to traffickers, nor will it stop some from becoming traffickers or users of what traffickers have to offer. I do believe however, that those with strong foundations will make much better life choices. I also believe that a quiet, compassionate confidence is born out of this foundation and our communities will be much better places in which to live.
My hope is that this gives at least a small open window into why I chose to be a coach and why I do what I do! Life has so much to offer!!
