Boldly Courageous: Not Caving to Fear Interview Series

Perhaps you’ve heard this story? The one about the criminal who’d committed a crime?

Ha ha!

There once was a criminal who had committed a crime (no surprise there, eh?!) He was sent to the king for his punishment.

The king told him he had the choice of two punishments: He could be hung by a rope or choose what was behind the big, dark, scary, mysterious iron door.

The criminal quickly decided on the rope!

As the noose was being slipped upon him the criminal turned to the king and asked, “By the way, out of curiosity, what’s behind the door?”

The king laughed and said, “You know, it’s funny. I offer everyone the same choice and nearly everyone chooses the rope!”

“So,” the criminal said, “Tell me. What’s behind the door: I mean, obviously, I’m not going to tell anyone!” pointing to the noose around his neck.

The king paused, then answered.

“Freedom. It seems most people are so afraid of the unknown that they immediately take the rope.”

Fear of the unknown, of failure, of success, of judgement, of injury, of death, of ……

“It seems most people are so afraid of the unknown that they immediately take the rope.”

Fear is universal. Everyone who has ever lived, is living, and will live, experiences fear! Age, gender, size, financial situation, position, state of health, level of spirituality or education; there is no partiality!

I believe, collectively, we have experienced an inordinate level of fear that has not been felt before on such a global scale. Between lock downs, lack of contact, fear mongering, stacked with the overwhelming amount of information available to us, the past couple of years have left many of us in a simmering state of stress. I am by no means belittling the years of wars happening in various countries around the world and what havoc they have wreaked on people. What I’m speaking about here is the global effect of this pandemic and its fall-out; no country in the world is left untouched, at the same time. Fear, stacked on fear, with none of the normal ways to deal with it has created an extended atmosphere of edginess. It has taken its toll through skyrocketing increases in mental illness, divorce, human trafficking, domestic abuse, etc. This heightened vigilance is lingering instead of dissipating, showing up in the way we are treating each other on a daily basis.

THERE IS HOPE!!!

I have had the privilege of interviewing a number of experts on the topic of fear. Their own experience coupled with their work with clients gives them a unique look into the inner workings of fear. These experts have revealed the many ways we can recognize, call out, and work WITH our fear in the helpful manner it is intended, helping us to reduce that simmering level of stress a great many of us are struggling with.

I believe, collectively, we have experienced an inordinate level of fear that has not been felt before on such a global scale.
