Observations
When I started working in a ‘career’ I lived in the Kitchener-Waterloo area in Southwestern Ontario. I cycled everywhere! On Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings I would cycle into Elmira to the Stock Yards to get my vegetables, fruit, bread, and meat for the next few days. It was all incredibly fresh.
I would sit and have a bite to eat before I cycled back home and just watched people. Not in a judgemental way, or in a creepy way. I just watched. I was fascinated with the interactions of the people haggling over prices. The vendors would always have a slightly higher price on the products so there was room to negotiate.
I laughed often at the bluffing and puffing of the vendors and their clients as they haggled their way to a mutual price.
The bravado from the vendor was met with bluster and a loud give and take ensued! What a game! It all ended in a handshake and an exchange of goods. Smiles all around. It was so much fun to be entertained in such a manner.
Later, when I too grew and sold vegetables I loved the fun of haggling over the prices! For those who didn’t know haggling was expected, I always gave them a “discount.” They were none the wiser, I presumed.
Sometimes we just need to stop and watch. No expectations, no judgement, no interference.
