Let Your Emotions Inform Your Choices
Our emotions are powerful messengers. They signal what matters to us, highlight when boundaries are crossed, and remind us of our needs and values. But emotions are not commands ~ they don’t tell us what to do; they offer information for us to consider.
Let’s explore how to welcome your emotions as important advisors, while still holding the power to make conscious, thoughtful choices about how to respond. This balance is where true emotional freedom lives.
Our emotions are powerful messengers.
Emotions as Valuable Information
Emotions give us valuable data about our experiences. For example:
Anger might signal that a boundary has been crossed.
Sadness can highlight a loss or unmet need.
Joy often points us toward what brings meaning and fulfillment.
Feeling undervalued can show us where we need to affirm our own worth.
The key is to treat emotions as informants, not dictators.
Emotions give us valuable data about our experiences.
Pause, Reflect, Choose
Create a space to let your emotions inform your choices:
Pause and listen deeply.
Reflect on what the feeling is telling you.
Consider how your beliefs and stories shape your emotional response.
Decide how to respond in a way that aligns with your values and goals.
This approach invites kindness and curiosity toward your feelings, rather than judgment or suppression. It’s an invitation to own your emotional experience—and your life.
Create a space to let your emotions inform your choices.
Stop Giving Away Your Power
When we believe others make us feel a certain way, we give away something precious: our power. We hand over control of our emotions and, by extension, our peace and well-being, to people and situations outside ourselves.
It’s time to stop giving away your power to something or someone else. Instead, choose to take back the steering wheel of your inner life. This doesn’t mean ignoring your feelings or pretending everything is fine. It means recognizing that while you can’t control what happens, you can control how you respond.
It’s time to stop giving away your power to something or someone else.
A Simple Framework to Take Back Control (The Five Second Moment™️)
Here’s a practical way to work with your emotions as information rather than commands:
Notice: Become aware of what you’re feeling without judgment.
Name: Label the emotion clearly.
Question: Ask yourself what story or belief is behind this feeling.
Choose: Decide how you want to respond—not automatically, but intentionally.
Owning your emotions is not about blaming yourself or pretending feelings don’t matter. It’s about welcoming your emotions as guides while choosing the path you want to take.
When you let your emotions inform your choices, you live with greater freedom, peace, and purpose.
