Food

There is almost always food.

Birthdays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, weddings, funerals, anniversaries, barbecues, potlucks, showers, open houses. Someone brings a casserole, there is a plate of sandwiches, coffee is made, and someone has brought something sweet. Food seems to find its way into almost every occasion when people come together.

Food seems to find its way into almost every occasion when people come together.

And it doesn't have to be anything elaborate. Sometimes it's a pot of soup simmering on the stove, a loaf of bread, a plate of cookies, a bowl of popcorn, or coffee and whatever happens to be in the cupboard.

There was usually something happening in the kitchen. Someone was chopping, someone was stirring, someone was setting something out, and someone wandered in to see what smelled so good. People came and went, and while the food was being prepared, conversation happened.

Just conversation.

A story from the day. Something that happened at work. A neighbour's news. A funny thing one of the children had said. An old story that had been told before but was apparently worth telling again.

Food has a way of drawing people together without anyone having to make a plan for it. We don't necessarily say, “Let's get together and talk.” We say, “Come for dinner,” or “Come in for coffee,” or “I've made too much. Take some home.”

And somehow, that's enough.

Food has a way of drawing people together.

Of course, life has changed. We eat differently, we work different hours, families are scattered across cities, provinces and countries, and there are evenings when everyone is coming and going in a different direction.

And yet, food still brings us together.

We meet for coffee. We invite someone for dinner. We take a meal to a friend. We gather around a barbecue. We bring something to a potluck. We sit down over lunch and discover that an hour has disappeared.

The circumstances may have changed, but somehow food keeps finding its way into the middle of our time together.
